Required to carry rolled coil steel, the Victorian Railways (VR) constructed a total of 90 CSX wagons. Wagons 1-30 were built at Newport in 1966 from steam tender underframes, and wagons 31-90 were built new at Ballarat in 1972. Each wagon had five cradles for carrying coils. To protect the coil rolls, the wagons were fitted with large steel hoops and bulkheads at each end to allow a tarpaulin to cover the load. With the introduction of the four letter code, these wagons were reclassified as VFSX, and in the late 1980s they became VCSX, with the ‘C’ denoting the wagon purpose as ‘Coil’ steel. The wagons were primarily loaded at Hastings in Victoria. With the formation of National Rail (NRC) the majority of the VCSX wagons were transferred from Vline, and were recoded RCSX in 1994. At this stage they retained their 50t bogies, and tarpaulin hoops and bulkheads. In 1995, upgrades began which included fitting 70t standard gauge ‘Barber’ bogies, and removing the tarpaulin hoops and bulkheads. When 70t bogies were fitted, the code was changed to RCSF and they were being primarily loaded out of Port Kembla in New South Wales. During the upgrades, many RCSF wagons were painted NRC grey, some with orange striping, but others remained in red V/Line livery with a basic databoard change. To protect the load, tarpaulins were simply pulled over the load, resting on the top of the steel coils. In 2003, the smaller coils commonly loaded on RCSF wagons were being loaded into coil containers which provided better protection. The RCSF was too short to carry two coil containers, so RCAF ‘Jumbo’ coil wagons were converted to container wagons to carry coil containers, and some RCSF coil wagons were converted to carry ‘Jumbo’ coils. Approximately 25 RCSF wagons remain in active service.
