During 1976 and 1977, the New South Wales Public Transport Commission took delivery of 530 new 81t gross WTY class grain wagons. These wagons were built in two groups, 300 wagons by Goninan and 230 wagons by Mittagong Engineering. Numbered 35901 to 36200, the 300 Goninan built wagons differed slightly in construction from the Mittagong Engineering built wagons. The two groups can be identified by the shape of the wagon sides at each end. The sides of the Goninan built wagons feature a straight angled end, while the Mittagong Engineering built wagons have a curved end. All wagons were of aluminum construction, but did have the ends of the hopper body painted blue. From 1980, under the new Railways of Australia (ROA) wagon classification system, both groups of WTY wagons were reclassified to NGTY class wagons. Commencing in 1988, as part of a wider grain fleet upgrade program, the 300 Goninan built NGTY wagons were progressively fitted with air operated discharge doors and reclassified to NGPY class wagons to reflect this change. During 1989, as part of an effort to bring existing grain wagon fleet codes into line with newer Railways of Australia (ROA) wagon classification requirements, the NGPY wagons were to be reclassified to NGPF class wagons to reflect the fact these wagons could only operate at normal freight speeds. Although the recoding of these wagons commenced in 1989, it was not until 2005 under Pacific National’s grain fleet upgrade program that the last of the NGPY wagons were reclassified to NGPF class wagons. In February 2002, the remaining 261 NGPF and 34 NGPY class wagons were transferred to Pacific National when they purchased the then New South Wales government owned FreightCorp. Commencing in 2003, Pacific National embarked on a grain fleet upgrading program which included the NGPF and NGPY wagons. These upgrades included the fitting of air operated roof hatches which enable crews to work from ground level rather than having to climb on top of the wagons. As a result of these improvements, all existing walkways and ladders were removed. As mentioned previously, during this upgrade program, Pacific National took the opportunity to reclassify the remaining NGPY wagons to NGPF class wagons. From inception, these grain wagons have been used primarily within New South Wales on export (silo to port) grain services, although they were initially restricted to main and heavy branch line operations only. Since 1988, these wagons have been able to operate on selected lighter branch lines provided the wagons are restricted to a weight of 76t gross. |
