During 1988, the New South Wales State Rail Authority took delivery of 55 new NQIW class container wagons built by Lansdowne Engineering. Numbered 60285 to 60339, these 14.6m long skeletal container wagons feature a 1020mm deck height which allows them to carry 2.9m high 20ft or 40ft long containers. These wagons are fitted with Gloucester bogies and all wagons were delivered painted Indian Red. While in service with the State Rail Authority, these wagons were allocated to interstate container services, initially between Sydney and Brisbane, and then later on other interstate services. During 1994 and 1995, all 55 NQIW wagons were transferred to National Rail Corporation (NRC) where they were re-coded to RQIW, and repainted light grey. In addition to their use on container services, the RQIW wagons were also utilised by NRC on their SteelLink services carrying coil steel and scrap steel containers. In NSW these wagons also carried ore containers. In February 2002, the 55 RQIW wagons were transferred to Pacific National when they purchased NRC. During 2002 and 2003, Pacific National refurbished a number of RQIW wagons, the result of which saw some wagons repainted in a darker grey livery. Currently the RQIW wagons can be seen on both Pacific National intermodal (container) and steel services across the mainland on the interstate standard gauge network. |
